Test, test, test!

Before committing to a particular colour finish it's a good idea to paint a small test area.

For floors find a suitable area and paint a small patch so you can get an idea of how the paint looks in-situ.

For walls, a handy tip is to paint a large piece of paper with the colour you're thinking of using which you can then attach to the wall in various locations to see how the paint looks at different times of day and under different lighting conditions.
